What to know about the Oak Barrel Half Marthon

By midmorning Saturday, Lynchburg’s Square will be buzzing — and if you are not wearing a race bib, you may be wondering what all the commotion is about.
The answer is the Oak Barrel Half Marathon, the annual 13.1-mile race that turns historic Lynchburg into both a starting line and a finish-line celebration.
The race begins at 196 Main St. and sends runners out of town and into the scenic backroads of Moore County, where the course trades speed for scenery and asks participants to earn every mile. Along the way, runners pass one of the county’s most recognizable landmarks, the Jack Daniel’s Distillery, before looping back toward the Square.
But make no mistake: this is not the kind of course built for easy personal records.
The Oak Barrel is known for its rolling hills and its signature test of grit — Whiskey Hill, a nearly mile-long climb that begins between miles 3.5 and 4. What starts as a manageable incline gradually stiffens, then sharpens, then seems to grow a little attitude of its own. By the time runners hit the final switchback near the top, the hill feels less like part of the route and more like a challenge issued directly to every pair of legs on the course.
Those who make it over the top are rewarded with one of the race’s best stretches: a scenic ridgeline run and, eventually, a gradual descent back toward town.
That combination is part of what gives the Oak Barrel its reputation. It is not flat. It is not easy. And it is not designed to hand out effortless finish times. What it offers instead is something better — a course with character, countryside views worth looking up for, and the shared spirit that comes when hundreds of runners take on the same hills together.
For visitors, that is why Lynchburg will be a little more crowded than usual Saturday.
For runners, that is exactly the point.
Those planning to attend should note that parking is available at Wiseman Park, just behind the Square. And for everyone else? Consider the crowd a sign that one of Lynchburg’s most distinctive spring traditions is back on the run.
