Journalism and Ethics Standards
Accuracy and Fairness
• All Observer reporting must be factually accurate, verified with credible sources, and supported by evidence.
• Headlines, quotes, and photographs should not mislead or distort context.
• Reporters must strive for fairness, providing all relevant sides of a story when appropriate.
Independence and Objectivity
• Journalists must avoid conflicts of interest and disclose any that exist.
• Reporting must be free from undue influence, including from advertisers, political figures, or personal relationships.
• Staff should not accept gifts or favors that could compromise integrity.
Accountability and Transparency
• The Observer will correct errors promptly and transparently.
• Ethical lapses must be acknowledged; corrections and clarifications should be published as needed.
• Reporters should be open with readers about sources and methods, unless doing so would endanger a source or violate a justified confidentiality agreement.
Respect for Sources and Subjects
• Sources should be treated with respect and honesty, especially vulnerable or at-risk individuals.
• Anonymity should be granted only when necessary and with editorial oversight.
• Sensitivity should be used when reporting on grief, trauma, minors, or private individuals.
Avoidance of Plagiarism
• All content must be original or properly attributed.
• Use of others’ work – text, photos, video, etc. – must include credit and, when necessary, permission.
Integrity in Newsgathering
• Journalists must use legal and ethical methods to gather information.
• Data, documents, and digital content must be verified and not manipulated.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
• The Observer will strive for diverse representation in both staffing and coverage.
• Stories should reflect a broad range of voices, cultures, and experiences, avoiding stereotypes and bias.
Editorial Independence from Advertising
• The Observer does not accept advertising. We are committed to community partnerships.
• We will promote your business at no cost as a #CommunityPartner on our platforms.
• We do not accept advertising, sponsorships, or donations. We are Moore County's only independent news organization.
Responsible Use of Technology
• Digital tools and AI must be used ethically and transparently.
• Deepfakes, image manipulation, or AI-generated content must be labeled and never used to mislead.
Commitment to the Public Good
• Journalism should serve the public interest by promoting truth, civic engagement, accountability, and informed discourse.
• Investigative reporting should hold power to account while protecting the public.
