You Don’t Rise to the Occasion

Big moments do not create character – they reveal habits, faith, discipline

You Don’t Rise to the Occasion

It sounds good. Strong. Confident. Maybe even impressive to your friends. But the truth is a little different. Most of the time, you don’t rise to the occasion.

You fall to the level of your preparation. The big moments in life – the ones that matter most – don’t suddenly create who you are. They reveal who you’ve been becoming all along.

When your kids are watching how you respond to pressure and frustration. When your spouse needs your strength and shoulder instead of your stress and anxiety. When a business deal falls apart, everyone looks to you for leadership.

Those moments don’t build your character; they simply expose it.

That’s why the "normal,” ordinary days matter so much. The early mornings when you choose discipline. The prayers whispered before sunrise and throughout your day. The decision to sit a little longer at the dinner table, instead of running back to work. The times you leave your phone in the other room, instead of bringing it to the table.

Those small choices are shaping you.

Faith works the same way. When life punches you in the mouth, in the way that only life is so good at doing, you don’t suddenly become spiritually strong because the moment demands it.

You lean on the faith you’ve been building. You lean on the prayers you’ve prayed. You lean on the trust you’ve been learning to place in God.  The belief that He’s walking ahead of you and with you – even when the road gets a little bumpy.

That’s where grit and love meet. Grit shows up and does the hard work. Love reminds us why the work matters. Your family is watching. Your team is watching. The people God has placed in your life are watching. Not to see if you’re perfect, but to see if you’re real, to see if you’re who you say you are!

So, this week: Build the habits. Pray every single day. Work, even though it’s hard. Love your people with intentionality.

When life’s defining moments arrive, you won’t need to magically rise to the occasion. You’ll simply reveal what’s already been built inside you.
