Moore County Raiderettes head basketball coach Chad Spencer is going home.

After five seasons and two state tournament appearances, Spencer is returning to his alma mater, Shelbyville.

Spencer told his team on Wednesday morning of his decision. Moore County finished 17-11 this season and was eliminated in the West Region semifinal.

A Bedford County native, Spencer graduated from Shelbyville Central High School in 1991 and later attended Motlow College and Middle Tennessee State University. He and his wife, Scarlet Spencer, are both Bedford County natives.

Spencer began his coaching career under renowned Shelbyville coach Rick Insell, a TSSAA Hall of Fame member who led the program to 10 state championships and five runner-up finishes over 28 seasons.

Spencer later coached at Harris Middle School and Liberty Middle School before being named head coach at Cascade in 2007. He spent seven seasons there. Additionally, Spencer served as the head golf coach, leading his team to four consecutive appearances in the TSAA state tournament.

Spencer also worked at Ole Miss under Lady Rebels head coach Matt Insell, where he handled scouting and film breakdown.

Moore County High School hired Spencer in May 2021. During his tenure, the Raiderettes reached the state tournament in back-to-back seasons in 2023-24 and 2024-25. After Moore County finished as the Class 1A state runner-up in 2023-24, Spencer was named the BCAT Pat Summitt Coach of the Year.

Outside basketball, Spencer is a Tennessee Walking Horse owner and exhibitor. In 2023, he was a world champion and reserve world grand champion with This Is Who I Am in the owner/amateur country pleasure division at the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration.
