Moore County families can now enroll eligible children for the 2026-27 school year in a free preschool program in Lynchburg through the South Central Human Resource Agency’s Head Start program.
SCHRA’s Head Start and Early Head Start programs serve children and families at no cost, with an emphasis on school readiness, health, and early development. In Moore County, Head Start is available for children ages 3 to 5, and a child must be 3 years old by Aug. 15 to enroll in the local classroom. Head Start helps children build literacy, math, and social-emotional skills before they enter kindergarten.
In addition to classroom instruction, the program provides nutritious meals, health and dental screenings, and referrals to medical providers when needed. Those services can help families identify health concerns early and address issues that could affect a child’s readiness for school.
Families can also take part in parent activities, receive parenting support, and connect with community resources.
Moore County Head Start operates in a licensed facility staffed by qualified teachers trained in early childhood education. At least 10% of enrollment is reserved for children with disabilities, and the program also serves children with special needs.
The program serves families who meet federal income guidelines or who are otherwise considered at risk.
Moore County Head Start is located at 75 High St. in Lynchburg. Families applying should be prepared to provide proof of the child’s birth, proof of income or public assistance for the previous 12 months, and health insurance cards if available.
Applications may be started online through SCHRA’s Head Start application portal, or call (931) 759-4239 for assistance.
