On Wednesday evening, if the countdown holds, astronauts will head for lunar space for the first time in more than 50 years.

Not to land. Not yet.

But for the first time since Apollo 17 in December 1972, a crew is scheduled to fly toward the Moon and come home again – a 10-day mission designed to prove NASA can once more send astronauts beyond low-Earth orbit and safely bring them back.

The mission is Artemis II. Its launch is scheduled for Wednesday, April 1, with a two-hour window opening at 5:24 p.m. CT from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The world will see the fire. What it will not see as easily is everything inside that rocket: the years of engineering, testing, fabrication, and precision required to put four astronauts atop it. Much of that work runs through Huntsville, Ala. One meaningful piece of it runs through Moore County.

When Artemis II rises, a little bit of Lynchburg will be rising with it.

The Mission Before the Mission

Artemis II is a test flight, but it is also the mission that must succeed before Americans return to the lunar surface.

Artemis I, the uncrewed 2022 flight, proved the broad architecture could survive the trip. Artemis II is different. This time, four astronauts will be aboard Orion as NASA tests the spacecraft’s life-support systems, operations, and performance with a crew inside. They will fly around the Moon and back, becoming the first astronauts in generations to travel that far from Earth.

It is not a landing mission. It is the crewed proving ground for those who follow.

It is not Apollo replayed, and it is not yet boots in lunar dust. It is the hard bridge between ambition and achievement.

Why Huntsville Is Written All Over It

Florida may host the launch, but Huntsville helped build the machine.

NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center has been central to the Artemis program, particularly through its leadership of the Space Launch System, or SLS – the massive rocket that will send Orion and its crew toward the Moon. Marshall engineers helped design, test, and integrate key elements of SLS, putting Huntsville back near the center of America’s deep-space program.

That is not ceremonial. It is structural.

SLS will carry Artemis II, and Huntsville helped build the hardware beneath that mission.

One of Marshall’s major contributions is the Orion stage adapter, which connects the Orion spacecraft to the rocket below it. It is one of the pieces most readers will never know by name, even though it is essential to the mission. The adapter was designed, built, and tested in Huntsville. So were key components and systems tied to the rocket that will hurl Artemis II out of Earth’s grip. Marshall has also overseen much of the development and testing behind SLS itself – a reminder that while the launch happens at the coast, the mission’s engineering story runs inland.

Huntsville is not just a city that remembers American space history. It is still helping build what comes next.

The Quiet Work Inside a Giant Rocket

That story extends beyond NASA itself.

Artemis II is the product of a vast industrial web – engineers, contractors, machinists, and manufacturers whose work disappears into the finished vehicle. The rocket may look singular on the pad, but it was built piece by piece, team by team.

In Huntsville, companies such as L3Harris and Teledyne Brown Engineering have been part of that effort. Their names may not be the ones most viewers remember on launch day, but their hardware rides just the same.

And that is where this story turns local.

Because one of the people who helped build a key part of Artemis II is from Lynchburg.

A Lynchburg Woman’s Hardware Is on This Rocket

Moore County’s Regina Russell Adcock says her team built the Launch Vehicle Stage Adapter, or LVSA, the cone-shaped section of the rocket that connects the core stage to the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage.

It is a load-bearing, protective, mission-critical piece of the rocket – the kind of hardware that has to work perfectly so everything above it can do the same.

Adcock described it this way: “Our team built the LVSA that connects the core stage to the upper stage (Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage), providing crucial structural support, aerodynamic protection, and shielding for avionics during launch. It is a 27.5-foot-tall, cone-shaped, manufactured piece.

“I feel very honored to be part of such a great team and to view the launch of the SLS rocket in person with our astronauts on board and see our hardware on that beautiful rocket. While this is not a landing on the moon, it is a making of history for NASA.”

She notes that the last on-boarded astronaut crewed flight was over 50 years ago, and vividly recalls July 20, 1969 – when the Eagle landed.

“Sometimes, it is hard for me to believe that little girl from the small town of Lynchburg is a part of such history. I can remember as a small child watching Neil Armstrong first walk on the moon. Little did I know then that I would be part of such a great journey. I feel very humbled and know that it is God who made this happen and not of myself.”

The sweep of the mission is right there in that statement.

That is the part of Artemis II that the mission graphics cannot show.

Space programs are often discussed in the language of budgets, timelines, and risk. They are all of those things. But they are also made of lives, careers, and callings – people who learned their trade well enough, and stayed at it long enough, to one day see their work stacked on a vehicle pointed at the Moon.

For Moore County, that is not an abstraction. That is Regina Russell Adcock.

More Than a NASA Story

There is another Huntsville thread aboard Artemis II as well.

Astronaut Christina Koch, one of the four crew members scheduled to fly the mission, is a Space Camp Hall of Fame inductee at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville. It is a fitting detail for a mission so bound up with the city’s identity. Huntsville has long helped inspire children to dream about space, but it has also continued to provide the engineering, training, and technical backbone behind those dreams.

Artemis II is not just a NASA story. It is also a story about the places that still know how to build for deep space – places that can turn national ambition into hardware.

And that is what makes the Moore County angle fit so naturally inside it. Big history rarely arrives all at once from one place. More often, it is assembled – piece by piece, town by town, team by team.

The Fire Everyone Will See – and the Story Behind It

When Artemis II lifts off Wednesday evening, the launch will be a spectacle in itself.

The rocket will rise in fire and noise. The cameras will track it skyward. Commentators will talk about thrust, trajectory, and staging. Around the country, people will stop long enough to watch astronauts head back toward a place that has lived mostly in memory for half a century.

But the fuller story of Artemis II is not only on the pad.

It is in the adapter built in Huntsville. It is in the systems tested there. It is in the contractors whose hardware disappears into the vehicle once the paint is on and the cameras roll. It is in the long chain of American engineering that still stretches from small towns to machine floors to launch complexes to the edge of the Moon.

And for Moore County, it is a fact that a woman from Lynchburg helped build part of the rocket now carrying astronauts back into lunar history.
