Ten years ago, Jack Daniel’s laid down a group of barrels in one of the hottest corners of the distillery.
Then Lynchburg’s summers went to work.
The barrels rested on the top floor of Barrelhouse 1-13 atop Coy Hill.
The whiskey inside those barrels is now Distillery Series Selection #17, a limited-edition High Angel’s Share Straight Tennessee Whiskey.
“This release is a perfect example of what happens when we let nature take the lead,” Master Distiller Chris Fletcher said.
The whiskey began as traditional Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey and went into barrels in 2016.
The difference was not the recipe. It was where the barrels spent the next decade.
High in a barrelhouse, the heat settles in and stays awhile. As temperatures climb, more whiskey evaporates – what distillers call the angel’s share. In these barrels, that evaporation concentrated the flavors left behind.
Fletcher said the years atop Coy Hill brought out a different side of the distillery’s traditional Tennessee Whiskey.
Jack Daniel’s describes the finished whiskey as carrying notes of brown sugar, banana nut bread, and maple syrup, followed by a long finish with a touch of oak.
Selection #17 is part of the Distillery Series, Jack Daniel’s line of experimental whiskeys.
Jack Daniel’s Whiskey Taster Dale McGee selected the batch. It was bottled at 138.4 proof – the strength of the combined whiskey rather than a set bottling proof.
The whiskey will be sold in 375-milliliter bottles beginning this month. It will be available only in Tennessee and at the White Rabbit Bottle Shop at the Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg.
The suggested retail price is $44.75.
After 10 years at the top of Coy Hill, the heat had left its mark.
