Teacher Appreciation Week

Teacher Appreciation Week

REASON BROWN
MCO Student Journalist

It’s that time of year again. State testing is over (finally), there are three weeks left of school, and we are stuck inside while the UV is 7. It's a true tragedy. Despite this, it’s also that time of year when we as a community get to show our love and appreciation to our local teachers.

Teachers do almost everything: educate, babysit, console – you name it. Acknowledging their significant challenges, like large class sizes, balancing different learning styles, student behavioral issues, and so much more, is important. These educators are put under so much stress and pressure to teach the minds of tomorrow while facing obstacles that are out of their control.

Makyla Brown would love to show appreciation for Aimee Houghton, the 9th-Grade English teacher. Not only is she her former ELA teacher, but also her class sponsor. She does anything and everything for her students, no matter what.

Houghton’s laid-back attitude and easy-to-talk-to personality make her comfortable around. Even though she is not her teacher anymore, it doesn’t stop her from chatting with her between classes.

Makyla would love to have Houghton teach her again if given the opportunity. “I know juggling being a teacher and a parent is hard, but she makes it look so easy.”

Science teacher Jonah Deal always puts his students first. Maliah Qualls knows him to be funny and kind, always ensuring his students are having a good time while also completing their assignments. Do you have the stupidest question on earth? Consider it answered. Do you need any extra supplies? They’re all on the shelf in the corner. He considers all his students’ needs and does his best to meet them.

Brooklyn Hernandez recognizes Physical Science, Anatomy, and Physiology teacher Bill Kuhar as an individual who cares about his students and pushes them to be their best.

“Kuhar is one of those teachers that wants you to give all you can into your education; that is one thing I really love about him,” she said.

You either love or hate his unique teaching style, but if you ask her, she loves it. You aren’t reading from a boring textbook the entire class; it’s engaging and interactive. Kuhar goes out of his way to create a bond with his students during and beyond his time in class.

To all the teachers, take care of yourself. Set boundaries, take breaks when needed, and get a hobby. It’s important to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Plan and prioritize your tasks to avoid feeling overwhelmed or burnt out, and take time to do things that will help you relax and let loose a little.

Keep our teachers in mind throughout this week. They do so much with little credit or recognition. Write them a note, give them their favorite candy, or simply tell them how much you appreciate them.
