You may hear this one coming before you see it.
On Saturday, Oct. 24, motorcycles will start finding their way into Lynchburg from every direction. They’ll come in on Highway 50, Highway 55, Highway 82, down Tanyard Hill, and from all points in between, with riders making their way toward Wiseman Park.
By the time they get here, Lynchburg ought to have a little more rumble than usual.
Thunder in the Hollow is built around motorcycles, but you do not need one sitting in the garage to enjoy the day. Live music, food, vendors, contests, and plenty of bikes are part of the plan, with riders and non-riders welcome.
Bring the bike if you have one. If you don’t, come anyway.
Roads made for an October ride
Late October is a pretty good time to point a motorcycle toward Lynchburg. The worst of the summer heat is behind us, and the hillsides are starting to change. Coming into town on two wheels is a pretty good way to see it.
Once the bikes are parked, there will not be much reason to hurry back out. Listen to the music, grab something to eat, talk to somebody you know, and circle back through the motorcycles later. Chances are another bike or two will have rolled in while you were gone.
Some riders will come from just down the road. Others will have a few miles behind them before Lynchburg shows up ahead, but everybody winds up in the same place – Wiseman Park.
The band behind the noise
There is more to Thunder in the Hollow than filling Lynchburg with motorcycles for an afternoon. The event will help support the Moore County High School Marching Band, putting a local purpose behind all that noise.
The connection feels right. The band is there on Friday nights, and those kids turn up all over Moore County during the year, carrying instruments or flags and doing their part whenever something is going on.
This time, the bike crowd gets a chance to show up for them.
Wear the Hollow home
The 2026 Thunder in the Hollow T-shirt features the Thunder in the Hollow logo above a motorcycle winding through a Lynchburg landscape. Shirts are $25 each and $30 for larger sizes.
More important, proceeds from every shirt sold will go directly toward supporting the band.
So the shirt gives riders something to carry home from the day, and the money stays right here with Moore County kids.
Bring an appetite, too
A fall motorcycle rally needs something hot waiting when the kickstands go down. Titan Chili is among the vendors headed to Thunder in the Hollow, bringing its award-winning fare to Lynchburg.
After an October ride into town, a bowl of chili ought to make a pretty good argument for itself.
Other vendors and small businesses will be part of the day as well. Folks can eat, look over the bikes, listen to some music, then hang around to see who comes rumbling in next.
A little louder than usual
Some riders will spend the morning getting every bit of chrome just right. Others will arrive with a little road dust still hanging on. Nobody is likely to care much either way.
That is the kind of crowd Thunder in the Hollow is hoping to bring to Lynchburg – riders looking for somewhere to go on an October Saturday and local folks curious enough to walk over and see what rolled into town.
Eventually, the bikes will head back out the same roads they came in on, and Lynchburg will throttle down. But a few more dollars will stay behind with the MCHS band.
And when those motorcycles start coming in, you probably will not need anybody to tell you where the crowd is.
Just listen.
