Jack Daniel’s is taking one of last summer’s popular pours and putting it in a can – and the move comes as both Tennessee Blackberry and ready-to-drink cocktails are posting gains for Brown-Forman.
The Lynchburg whiskey maker announced Monday that Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Blackberry mixed with Lemonade is joining its ready-to-drink lineup, putting the combination in a can for the first time.
The new cocktail blends Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Blackberry with lemonade and checks in at 4.8% alcohol by volume and 100 calories per 355 mL can. It is also the first Jack Daniel’s ready-to-drink cocktail packaged in the brand’s new sleek white can.
Blackberry keeps pulling weight
Blackberry has become an important part of the Jack Daniel’s lineup in a short time. Brown-Forman credited the flavor with helping its whiskey portfolio grow 3% during the fiscal year that ended April 30, even as sales of flagship Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey declined. Companywide net sales fell 1% for the year, while U.S. sales were down 7%. Brown-Forman did not break out Blackberry sales separately, but it pointed to the new flavor as one of the bright spots.
That carried into the new fiscal year. Brown-Forman’s first-quarter sales slipped another 1%, but Old No. 7 held steady worldwide and gained volume in the United States. Tennessee Blackberry was doing some work of its own. The company said its international rollout helped offset declines in Tennessee Honey and Gentleman Jack, and Brown-Forman increased spending behind Blackberry as it reached more markets.
RTD gives it room to run
Putting Blackberry into a can also drops it into a part of the business that is growing faster than much of the whiskey shelf. Brown-Forman’s ready-to-drink portfolio increased sales 20% in the quarter, with New Mix among the products helping drive that growth.
For Jack Daniel’s, the Blackberry-and-lemonade combination came straight from what drinkers were already pouring. When Tennessee Blackberry arrived last summer, lemonade quickly became one of its signature mixes. The response was strong enough that the company decided the drink belonged in the canned lineup.
“When we launched Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Blackberry last summer, fans quickly fell in love with its signature cocktail of Tennessee Blackberry and refreshing lemonade,” said Mary Beth O’Mara, Jack Daniel’s RTD brand director. “After seeing the response, we knew it was the cocktail that earned its can, and we’re excited to bring it to our friends in a format that makes it even easier to enjoy.”
Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Blackberry mixed with Lemonade begins rolling out nationwide this month in four-packs of 355 mL cans. The suggested retail price is $11.99.
Blackberry has already shown it can pull some weight for Jack Daniel’s. Now it is getting a place in the cooler, too.
