Metro Council meeting: 6:30 p.m. Monday at American Legion Building

The Metro Council will hold a consequential meeting on Monday. Members will discuss a possible pause on new data centers, the next step in a quarry rezoning request in Tolleytown, a new agreement with Atmos Energy, and a budget amendment for attorney fees related to the Gateway lawsuit.

The meeting is at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion Building, 119 Booneville Hwy.

Atmos Energy

One agenda item would allow Atmos Energy to continue operating, maintaining, and expanding its natural gas system in public areas across Moore County. The agreement would last 10 years, with the option to renew it twice for five more years each time.

Data Center Moratorium

Council members will also discuss a proposed pause on new data centers, cryptocurrency mining, and similar large computing sites. This two-year break, from April 20, 2026, to April 19, 2028, would give county officials time to study how these projects might affect utilities, water use, noise, land, and nearby property owners.

Rock Quarry

Also on the agenda is a discussion of reopening a rock quarry in Tolleytown, a closely watched land-use issue. Earlier this month, the Planning and Zoning Commission voted unanimously to send Lynchburg Stone Inc.’s site plan to the Metro Council for a rezoning decision. On March 4, P&Z board members considered issues such as blasting safety, traffic on Highway 50, environmental risks in the area, and whether the potential tax and business benefits outweigh concerns about blasting, truck traffic, and the sensitive environment.

Budget Amendment

The agenda also includes a budget change for attorney fees related to the Gateway project lawsuit. The case is still active after a judge rejected the developer’s request for a quick decision. It challenges zoning changes for apartment development in Moore County and raises questions about public notice and meeting rules.
