For three quarters Monday night, Moore County and Cascade couldn't put more than a point between them at the buzzer. The Raiders finally found some breathing room in the fourth, and it was enough to knock off the Champions, 41-34.
Max Dickey and Grayson Hill got Moore County started, scoring four points apiece in the opening quarter. Sawyer Boyce added a basket as the Raiders put 10 points on the board, but Cascade had an answer.
Piercen McGee scored four for the Champions, while Lane Dudeck knocked down a 3-pointer. Slade Stacey and Miller Pilkington chipped in two apiece, giving Cascade an 11-10 advantage after one.
Raiders take the lead, but can't pull away
Moore County had an answer in the second quarter, and Dickey wasn't finished contributing.
Brantly Chapin got into the act with four points, Dickey added another four, and Boyce contributed two as the Raiders matched their opening-quarter production. Cascade countered with a 3-pointer from McGee, three points from Stacey, and a basket from Austin Schmidt, but the Champions couldn't hang on to their slim advantage.
Moore County won the quarter 10-8 and carried a 20-19 lead into halftime. Two quarters, two one-point margins. Only the team out front had changed.
And the Raiders had done it without a single 3-pointer or free throw. All 20 first-half points came on two-point baskets, with Dickey accounting for eight of them.
The third quarter settled nothing. Dickey continued to carry the scoring load, adding four points on a basket and two free throws. Laken Wade contributed his first two points of the night, while Hill added a free throw.
McGee kept Cascade within striking distance, scoring five of the Champions' seven third-quarter points, including another 3-pointer. Stacey added the other two, leaving the Champions no closer than they'd been at halftime.
Seven points apiece. Moore County's halftime lead survived the third quarter, but it hadn't grown an inch.
Fourth-quarter surge seals the win
Then Moore County went to work.
The Raiders outscored Cascade 14-8 in the fourth, with Boyce scoring six of his 10 points during the decisive stretch. Chapin added four, while Dickey and Hill chipped in two apiece as Moore County delivered its best offensive quarter of the night.
Dickey's 14 points led the way, followed by Boyce with 10, Chapin with eight, and Hill with seven. Wade rounded out the scoring with two.
McGee matched Dickey's game-high 14 points for Cascade, including two 3-pointers. Stacey added nine, and Dudeck finished with seven.
Raiderettes come up short against Cascade
The MCMS Raiderettes had six players in the scoring column, knocked down four 3-pointers, and led after the first quarter Monday night.
Cascade had Mady Davis. And the free-throw line.
Davis poured in 28 points, and the Lady Champions outscored Moore County 10-0 at the stripe to claim a 36-30 victory.
Moore County outscored Cascade 30-26 from the floor, but the Lady Champions' 10 free throws erased that advantage and then some.
The Raiderettes took a 9-8 lead after the opening quarter. Cascade answered with an 11-7 edge in the second, carrying a 19-16 advantage into halftime.
Neither team gained ground in the third. Both scored seven points, leaving the Raiderettes trailing 26-23 heading into the fourth, with plenty of basketball left to play.
But Cascade held the upper hand down the stretch, outscoring Moore County 10-7 in the final quarter to secure the six-point win.
Ray leads balanced Raiderettes attack
Murphy Ray paced Moore County with 11 points, connecting on four two-point baskets and a 3-pointer.
Keegan Embrey added six points on a pair of 3-pointers, while Emmy Thomas chipped in five, including another shot from beyond the arc. Sadie Ivey contributed four points, and Maci Chapin and Madison Hatfield finished with two apiece.
Moore County spread the scoring around, with six players contributing and four shots falling from long range. Cascade, meanwhile, didn't make a single 3-pointer.
Then again, the Lady Champions didn't need one.
Davis accounted for 28 of Cascade's 36 points, connecting on 10 two-point baskets and eight free throws. Sarah Freeze added four points, Hayzlee Keele scored three, and Brailey Hood finished with one. Keele and Hood added one free throw apiece, while Moore County finished without a point from the stripe.
Davis scored nearly four out of every five points for Cascade, and the Lady Champions made their trips to the free-throw line count.
That was enough to leave Moore County six points short.
