Moore County High School students will have a new extracurricular option on the water. On Monday night, Principal Josh Deal addressed the Moore County Board of Education regarding the growing interest in a BASS-sanctioned fishing team.
“This is different than anything we’ve ever done before,” Deal said. He explained that while the team would represent the school, it would function more like a club sport outside traditional athletic programming. Each team would consist of two student anglers, and each team must secure a boat captain – an adult with a boat and proper insurance coverage. The school will not provide captains, boats, or equipment.
Will Baker, a community member with experience in collegiate-level fishing programs, has volunteered to serve as the team’s sponsor. “Will’s taking the lead on this,” Deal said. “If it’s approved, he’ll organize everything and make sure it runs properly.”
Interest in a fishing team has been strong among students for years, Deal added, with at least 10 teams expressing interest during a recent meeting, though participation will depend on the availability of captains and boats.
The BASS circuit hosts tournaments year-round, mainly on weekends, allowing compatibility with other school sports like football and baseball. “You pick and choose which tournaments to attend,” Deal noted. “It’s based on your schedule.”
Participation necessitates students to obtain an annual BASS membership, while entry fees will be supported through sponsorships and fundraising.
The Board voted unanimously to approve the formation of the team.
