Raiders bow out in District 9A loss

Moore County answered early in the losers’ bracket game, but Cornersville found the inning that decided it

Moore County found the swing it needed early Thursday.

Cornersville answered with the bigger inning late.

The Raiders fell, 8-6, to Cornersville in the losers’ bracket of the District 9A Tournament at Richland High School, a game that swung on a four-run fourth by the Bulldogs.

Cornersville struck first in the top of the first when Konner Calahan singled to bring home the game’s opening run.

Moore County answered in the bottom of the second with its best push of the day. Luke Stephens singled in a run, and Colton Morey followed with a three-run double to put the Raiders in front, 4-1.

Morey was in the middle of nearly everything for Moore County. He delivered the three-run double that gave the Raiders the lead and finished with a team-high three RBIs. He took the loss on the mound after working four innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits while striking out three and walking none.

That lead held until the fourth, when Cornersville flipped the game. Colyn Schillig doubled in two runs, Brady Jones added an RBI single, and another run scored on a fielder’s choice to give the Bulldogs a 6-4 lead.

From there, Moore County spent the rest of the evening chasing.

The Raiders kept fighting, finishing with nine hits. Jace Deal, Brodie Howard, and Luke Stephens each had two hits for Moore County, which also turned one double play defensively.

Hayden Cherry earned the win for Cornersville, working six innings and allowing nine hits and six runs, four earned. He struck out one and walked three. Schillig earned the save – striking out three in the seventh – and led Cornersville with three hits in four at-bats.

Cornersville finished with 12 hits. Schillig and Jones each drove in two runs.
