Jack Daniel Distillery’s release of the Single Barrel Special Release Tanyard Hill Rye marks an ambitious step forward in Tennessee rye whiskey innovation, led by Master Distiller Chris Fletcher. The 2025 addition is defined by its barrel proof, extended aging on historic Tanyard Hill – one of the oldest barrelhouse locations in Lynchburg – and rich, layered flavor.

A Distiller’s Perspective

During a virtual tasting of the release on Wednesday, Oct. 22, Fletcher described the Tanyard Hill Rye’s creation as stemming from the distillery’s foundational rye whiskey recipe: 70% rye, 12% malted barley, 18% corn – a grain bill that emphasizes rye’s signature spice while retaining a traditional approach that relies solely on malted barley for starch conversion, shunning artificial enzymes. This method, Fletcher emphasized, enables deeper, more complex fermentations that draw out an array of fruit notes, including classic Jack Daniel’s touches: apple, pear, and banana, as well as unexpected berry flavors unique to the rye expression.

Fermentations stretch over six and a half days, yielding about 12% alcohol, led by a proprietary yeast propagated weekly on-site. The painstaking fermentation process and custom yeast management, Fletcher said, impart red fruit and sweet mint notes and set the whiskey apart from others in the market.

Aging on Tanyard Hill

The Tanyard Hill barrelhouse’s top floor, where these barrels matured for almost a decade, is key to the whiskey’s personality. Fletcher explained that this site has quietly aged whiskey for over 60 years, “dotting the hilltops” alongside the famed Coy Hill. The release ranges in proof from approximately 130 to nearly 149, with some barrels losing only a fraction of proof during final filtration – a testament to the intense evaporation and concentration occurring at these elevated warehouse floors.

The proof, according to Fletcher, is not the focus: “When we’re aging whiskey, the last thing that I’ve ever considered is what’s going on with the proof. It’s about what’s going on with the flavor of the whiskey.”

The aging process leads to “big, bold, rich, intense” whiskey. Tasting notes feature common threads of cinnamon candy, dark cocoa, cherry, plum, and aromatic baking spices, backed by barrel-driven smoke, char, and leather. Some participants in the group call described nuances like cherry cola, strawberry, and pineapple alongside spice bread, making for a multifaceted, memorable rye.

Our rye whiskey does have that kind of fruit on the nose and in the front of the palate – slightly different than what you would get out of the Tennessee whiskey because of the grain bill and the difference in rye-based versus a corn-based mash. ... The yeast does provide that kind of sweet start to our rye whiskey.

A Sophisticated Balance

Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Special Release Tanyard Hill Rye stands apart not only for its nearly decade-long maturation but also for its sophisticated balance of bold rye character, sweetness, and deep barrel influence.

Depth of Aroma
The whiskey opens with aromas of dark fruit, plum, fig, and sweet oak, layered with candied mint and dark chocolate. Notes of toasted oak and faint tobacco give it a grounded, warming aroma. The distillery’s charcoal mellowing process introduces a subtle smoothness that softens the rye spice without muting it.

Layered Palate
On the palate, Tanyard Hill Rye delivers a full-bodied rye spice intertwined with flavors of molasses, clove, and vanilla, followed by bursts of red fruit and hints of citrus zest. The candied mint provides a cooling contrast to the spicy mid-palate, while dark chocolate and baking spice add velvety depth. The high proof (ranging from 130 to 148.8) amplifies these notes, creating a viscous, almost syrupy mouthfeel that coats the palate with warmth and intensity.

Finish and Texture
The finish is long, rich, and balanced, offering waves of clove, sweet tobacco, and oak that linger with a touch of leather and cocoa. Tasters describe it as “chewy,” “viscous,” and “juicy,” encapsulating the hallmark density of high-proof Jack Daniel’s ryes while remaining approachable and flavorful even at barrel strength.

The Distinct Tanyard Hill Signature
What distinguishes the Tanyard Hill expression is the influence of its aging environment. The top-floor barrels exposed to Tennessee’s varied seasons created deeper caramelization and intensified fruit and spice layers. This complexity, combined with nearly 10 years of maturation and the rye-forward grain bill, gives the whiskey its dark, minty, and chocolate-laced richness, positioning it as one of Jack Daniel’s most complex rye releases to date.

Heritage, Sentiment, and Barrelhouse Diversity

Fletcher’s enthusiasm for Tanyard Hill was matched by his sentimentality for the oldest barrelhouses on Track 1, the original distillery property. He noted, “There are 13 houses in total on Track 1, which is this distillery property. They start on Tanyard Hill, built in the ’60s.” He spoke not only as a distiller but as someone deeply tied to the Lynchburg landscape, explaining that each warehouse has unique characteristics based on elevation and exposure – factors that make each barrel house, from Coy Hill to Boiler Hill, distinct.

The diversity across nearly 100 barrelhouses over several tracts of land supports different expressions of whiskey – from bold and dark to surprisingly delicate – allowing Jack Daniel’s to “innovate in different ways” and “peel back the layers” of the region’s maturing whiskey styles.

Release Details and Reception

The 2025 Single Barrel Special Release Tanyard Hill Rye is a nationwide launch, featuring more than 15,000 bottles – a few thousand cases – available across the U.S. As Fletcher underscored, the whiskey delivers remarkable flavor at a high proof, but isn’t tied to marketing gimmicks. “The idea is to give you a dense, rich, full-flavor pour, and that’s where it’s at,” Fletcher said. The group of whiskey enthusiasts and media praised the release for its uniqueness and its ability to surprise even seasoned Jack Daniel’s drinkers, aligning with the distillery’s push for new horizons while honoring legacy methods.

Fletcher closed the interview with gratitude for the opportunity to innovate and share distinct barrelhouse-driven whiskeys. “These releases will continue to get attention, and it’s single barrel special release season in Lynchburg – we couldn’t be happier with it,” he said. The future, as he sees it for Jack Daniel’s rye, is full of untapped potential and continued exploration across Moore County’s historic hills.
