Enough Begins When God Becomes the Goal
What happens when accomplishment no longer feels like enough? A reflection on faith, purpose, and redefining success.

For much of my life, I thought “enough” was a number.
The problem was, every time I got close to it, I changed the number. There was always another deal. Another house. Another goal. Another level I thought might finally make me sit back and say, “Okay, I made it.” Then I reached some of those numbers, and they didn’t give me what I thought they would.
For a long time, my answer was simple: keep going. Set another goal. Move the finish line. Surely the next accomplishment would bring that “aha” moment I thought I was longing for. It never did.
I understand that differently today. I was asking achievement to give me something it was never capable of giving. God has blessed me far beyond anything I deserve, and I’m still learning how easy it is to become so focused on the next blessing that I fail to fully appreciate the ones staring me right in the face.
1 Timothy 6:6 says, “But godliness with contentment is great gain.” For years, I understood gain as getting more. God is teaching me that sometimes real gain looks like needing less. Not because achievement is wrong, but because it was never meant to become my identity.
Now, let me add some clarity—I still believe in goals. I still believe we should work hard, use our gifts well, and faithfully steward what God puts in our hands. But I don't want ambition to become an idol that I call discipline, or any one of a hundred other motivational names.
Because another accomplishment cannot give me what only God can. It’s what I misunderstood for so long. I was chasing money and accomplishments and completely missing that the goal was a relationship with God. The house deals, the numbers, and the accomplishments are not the destination. They are the tools He entrusted to me so that I would have the opportunities to serve people, feed my family, practice generosity, and point others toward Him.
That doesn’t mean we stop dreaming. It doesn’t mean we quit working hard or become satisfied with the gifts God gave us. It means that our ambition must remain a servant and never become our master.
So this week, let’s redefine “enough.”
Maybe enough isn't a number you reach. Maybe enough begins when you stop moving the finish line and recognize that God isn’t waiting for you somewhere beyond the next accomplishment. He is with you now. He is enough, and ultimately, He is the goal!
