What We Carry for One Another

Independence can build strength, but real growth also teaches us how to serve, encourage, and love others

What We Carry for One Another

For most of my life, I thought responsibility meant carrying my own weight.

Build your own success. Fight your own battles. Work harder. Figure it out. Take care of yourself, and don’t bother anyone.

What I’ve learned over time is that, yes, independence can build strength and mental toughness … but that isolation can rob you of the joy you might think that growth brings. Some of my greatest breakthroughs came when I finally allowed other people to help, to partner with me, or to walk alongside me.

Every one of us has a responsibility to become the best version of ourselves, but not for our own benefit alone. We become our best selves so we can benefit those around us, too. Your family needs your strength and love. Your friends need your encouragement. Your team needs your leadership. Your community needs your example and involvement.

The work we do on ourselves isn't selfish. It's stewardship. God has entrusted each of us with influence, whether that’s over a family, a friendship, a team, or simply the people we have the good fortune to encounter each day. We honor that responsibility when we become better, not for recognition, but so we can better serve the people He has placed in our path.

When we become more patient, someone receives more grace. When we become more disciplined, someone benefits from our consistency. When we become more loving, someone feels seen. When we become more faithful, someone finds hope.

We must also consider the other side of that coin:

Our unresolved anger affects others. Our negativity radiates from us in all the places we go. Our unwillingness to grow will become someone else’s burden. There have been seasons in my own life when I allowed myself to be short-tempered. Seasons when I was so focused on “succeeding” that I missed opportunities to encourage other people. Seasons when I allowed worry to impact the people that I love most.

None of us get it right all the time.

That’s why grace matters. God’s grace for us, and our grace for one another.

We should regularly ask ourselves if we’re becoming the type of person who makes life better for the people around us. The truth is that every interaction has some type of impact. Every conversation can encourage or discourage. Every encounter can inspire or dampen someone’s dreams. Every day gives us an opportunity to contribute something positive to the lives we touch.

So this week, be the reason someone stands a little taller, believes a little deeper, and hopes a little longer. You may never know the impact your kindness, encouragement, or example has on another person. But God does. I believe the seeds we plant in faith become blessings.

We are all connected, and we share a responsibility to one another.

Someone somewhere needs exactly what God is doing in and through you today!
